Many people experience loneliness especially when they grow older and find themselves living alone. This could be why so many people turn to pets for companionship. Cats and dogs give their human companions great love, loyalty and devotion. If we want to learn the true meaning of unconditional love, then our best teachers are our pets. However, if we can find a way to remember God, then loneliness will not be a problem.
As Lesson 41 in A Course in Miracles reminds us, “God goes with me wherever I go.” Jesus starts off this lesson with the following: “Today’s idea will eventually overcome completely the sense of loneliness and abandonment all the separated ones experience. Depression is an inevitable consequence of separation. So are anxiety, worry, a deep sense of helplessness, misery, suffering and intense fear of loss.” It is not surprising, then, that depression is a major health problem causing people to turn to tranquilisers for solace. Maybe the solution is to turn to God instead and remember, “You can never be deprived of your perfect holiness because its Source goes with you wherever you go. You can never suffer because the Source of all joy goes with you wherever you go. You can never be alone because the Source of all life goes with you wherever you go. Nothing can destroy your peace of mind because God goes with you wherever you go.”
It is not easy to remember this when we are alone or suffering or going through challenging times, but if we can, it will give us inner strength and peace. Daily prayer and meditation are ways of remembering God as well as finding joy in little things, such as a walk in a natural landscape, music or any other creative endeavour, helping others when possible. Practising the Lessons of the Workbook of A Course in Miracles is another wonderful way to keep God in our awareness.
