Enlightenment can seem out of reach at times to those on a spiritual path. We are dedicated to the truth; we read the words of those who have already achieved enlightenment and we follow their teachings; we meditate every day; we try our best to practise forgiveness and to extend love to all we meet, yet sometimes it feels as though we are stuck. Will we really become enlightened? Why is it taking so long? To those who feel like this, the following words of wisdom will be warmly welcomed.
The renowned spiritual teacher David Hawkins, in his book Discovery of the Presence of God, points out on p.101: “It is important to realize that the destiny of those who choose Enlightenment is Enlightenment—who else would be on such a quest?” That is such a motivating and encouraging observation. He continued: “One can also be grateful that they have heard of Enlightenment and have chosen to seek it, for such individuals are extremely rare indeed…the likelihood of a person’s choosing Enlightenment as the major purpose of one’s life is one in ten million people.” This seems an incredibly low figure.
And in the Manual of A Course in Miracles, Jesus also has uplifting words for us: “Forget not once this journey is begun the end is certain…No one can fail to do what God appointed him to do…” p.91
In The Way of the Heart Jesus continues to offer us encouragement: “Understand well: There is no one and there shall not at any time be anyone who reads these words to whom I have not given this promise unto. I will show you the way to the Truth that is true always and set you free.”
These quotations are food for thought and offer us hope as we travel along the path back home. All we need is faith in Jesus and the willingness to follow him.
