YOUR PAIN IS THE BREAKING OF THE SHELL THAT ENCLOSES YOUR UNDERSTANDING. EVEN AS THE STONE OF THE FRUIT MUST BREAK THAT ITS HEART MAY STAND IN THE SUN, SO MUST YOU KNOW PAIN . AND COULD YOU KEEP YOUR HEART IN WONDER AT THE DAILY MIRACLES OF LIFE, YOUR PAIN WOULD NOT SEEM LESS WONDROUS THAN YOUR JOY.
Some times life forces things on us which we are reluctant to do such as undergoing a necessary move, or the loss of a job, being made redundant or having to take early retirement, and so on, and these can affect us in distressing and depressing ways. Adding further to the list of different kinds of losses is the loss of our health, the loss of mobility, the loss of our hearing or sight, the loss of strength, confidence and peace of mind and the loss of close contact with family and close friends as they or we move to another country. What about the loss of personal possessions which we treasured and perhaps one of the greatest losses for anyone must surely be that of the death of a loved one, or loved ones, a truly traumatizing experience when you have been so close for many years; and you think how on earth are you going to cope, to carry on with life. Loss affects us all at some stage of life, in some form or another. It brings us pain, but it can also bring us blessings.
"What is our pain but the breaking of the shell encloses our understanding", as the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran so beautifully said. Indeed, it is through our most painful losses that we can experience the deepest blessings. The pain we experience is instrumental ( or should be if we let it ) in breaking our present level of perhaps restricted understanding. One needs to fully embrace that pain and allow oneself to go through the process of grief which is very natural. During this time we may experience intense mental anguish, deep remorse, acute sorrow, or the like. It is also very natural to feel angry, guilty, forsaken, bitter or lost and depressed. a great loss can feel like a amputation and it takes time for such a wound to heal.
IT IS NOT A CASE OF GETTING OVER THE LOSS, SO TO SPEAK, BUT RATHER GRADUALLY COMING TO LIVE WITH IT AND TO START BUILDING A NEW LIFE BASED ON A GREATER UNDERSTANDING THAT DEATH OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF LOSS IS BUT THE MEANS TO INCREASE OUR SOULS GROWTH AND TO ENABLE US AT SOME POINT IN TIME TO BE OF HELP TO OTHERS WHO FIND THEMSELVES DROWNING IN SOME FORM OF DEEP LOSS.
Indeed, Almighty God puts us here in order that we can face and overcome trials and tribulations and thereby grow strong in mind and spirit and how we meet these marks the measure of our character. We must always remember that life is a duality; for every single thing there is an opposite, so although you may be in the depths of the deepest despair and all you see is darkness, know that there is light at the end, and release and, dare I say it, happiness again provided you do not let yourself remain immersed for months and even years in that darkness.
Once you have allowed yourself a reasonable time to grieve and to take that first step towards emergence then the inner power of your soul steps in and assists you and in that emergence you will be able to look back in wonder and thank God for its purpose in your life.
